Spider-Man: Miles Morales Revealed to Be a PS5 'Standalone Expansion' | Article Reupload

Sony went in firing on all cylinders during its hour-long ‘#PlayStation5, Future of gaming’ live stream on Thursday. Not only did Sony finally reveal the (rather alien) design of the PlayStation 5 itself (along with some launch accessories), but they also announced a whopping 26 games both first and third-party.

One of the first games revealed during the event was Insomniac’s #SpiderMan: Miles Morales, which appeared to be a sequel to the critically acclaimed Spider-man, PS4 game. This time, as the name implies, #MilesMorales would stand in place of Peter Parker as New York’s resident friendly neighbourhood web-head. Now while that remains the case, sources have revealed that this Miles themed adventure will be less of a straight sequel and more of a ‘standalone expansion’ that has been enhanced for #PS5.

Initially following the event, many were confused as to whether Spider-man: Miles Morale, is meant to be a sequel, DLC, a spin-off of sorts or something else entirely. One of the first reports to try and clear the fog came from an interview from The Daily Telegraph, with Simon Rutter (head of European business operations at Sony) who described the game as an “expansion and an enhancement to the previous game."

Conflictingly Bloomberg News reported that a source confirmed Spider-Man: Miles Morales is not an expansion, but rather its own standalone game akin to that of Naughty Dog’s 2017 Uncharted Lost Legacy game.

Lost legacy served as a smaller adventure from the usual big cinematic set piece filled Uncharted games (and for almost half the price too). It also focused on the supporting cast of characters in lieu of the usual franchise protagonist, Nathan Drake. All of which certainly fits with what Spider-Man: Miles Morales appears to be aiming for, from what its brief trailer has shown.

To finally quell the growing fires and confusions (or perhaps unwittingly start new ones) Insomnia released a statement via Twitter explaining that ‘more will be revealed in the future’. In the same post, they closed it off by referring to Spider-Man: Miles Morales as a ‘standalone’ game, essentially confirming that this will not be a full sequel.

So what does this mean for Miles?

Ultimately it’s become very clear that Mile’s upcoming adventure will be at a smaller scale than the previous PS4 Spider-Man title, which takes about 16+ hours to complete (depending on how many side quests you take on). Its also important to note that you will not need to own any version of the PS4 Spider-man to play the new one, hence its ‘standalone’ nature. So this will be something in-between that of typical DLC and a full-priced title.

For those who are a little concerned, keep in mind that Uncharted Lost Legacy was a critical success that garnered mostly favourable reviews from fans and critics alike. On top of that Spider-Man: Miles Morales is in good hands over at Insomniac, and they will hopefully use this standalone iteration to introduce some new and experimental gameplay mechanics that help to differentiate it from its predecessor.

It looks like we’ll have to wait for a little bit longer to get the bigger picture from Insomniac, in regards to what more we can expect when the game launches later this year on PlayStation 5. But it's doubtful that this new information will affect anticipation levels and hype from awaiting fans.
